New York : Time Inc., The Sports Illustrated Group and Dennis Media TransAsia India will launch Sports Illustrated India, the third international edition of Sports Illustrated. A monthly publication, SI India will abide by the brand truths of its American counterpart, weaving words and images together to bring readers the richest and deepest understanding of sports—what happened, why it happened and what will happen next. The premiere issue will debut October 5.
Time Inc. and The Sports Illustrated Group have been publishing international editions under license in South Africa since May 2006 and in China since September 2006.
“We are very excited to expand SI’s global footprint with this latest edition in India,” said Sports Illustrated Group Editor Terry McDonell. “This is an opportunity to work closely with the SI India editorial team to develop unique opportunities for the entire Sports Illustrated Group.”
SI India is edited by Sundeep Misra, a sports journalist with over 15 years of experience. Regarding the launch, Misra said: “I have always been a fan of the American edition of Sports Illustrated, so to be at the helm of the Indian license is a great thrill for me. I am absolutely positive that Indian sports fans are going to love the package we are putting together and cannot wait to see how they react to the magazine.”
Jim Jacovides, Vice President of Licensing and Syndication for Time Inc. responded: “The passion for sports in India made this a natural market for Sports Illustrated’s international expansion. We are confident that our partner, Dennis Media TransAsia, shares our values, bringing local expertise to develop Sports Illustrated India into a top notch magazine that serves Indian sports fans and advertisers as only Sports Illustrated can.”
Dennis Media TransAsia’s Publishing Director, Mr. Richard Downey, added: “I am delighted to be the person that gets the honour of being the launch publisher of Sports Illustrated in India. Our challenge and opportunity is to produce a magazine that upholds the standards set by Sports Illustrated around the world with the passion and love that Indians have for sport.”
The launch will be complimented with a TV and an advertising campaign across India’s leading media and advertising publications as well as a multi-tiered PR strategy.
