The Truth of Saudi Mufti Fatwas

The tragedy of Karbala which took place on the 10th of Muharram, in the 61st year of hijra (October 2, 680 A.D.) was an event of unique significance in the history of mankind. Some see it as nothing more than a struggle for political power and sovereignty, while others consider it to be simply a rulers suppression of the rebellion of a rival. These people have failed to understand the significance of the the most tragic event in human history.

The best way to understand this tragic event is by viewing it in context of the teachings of Islam and the ultimate objectives of the Holy prophet (s.a.w.).

God Almighty sent his messengers and prophets for the establishment of justice. That is why throughout history prophets have opposed tyrants and oppressors. The Holy Quran urges Muslims to rise and fight for the liberation of Human beings from the yoke of injustice, oppression and exploitation :

What is (wrong) with you, that you do not fight in the way of God and in the way of the oppressed; men, women and children who say, Our Lord, bring us forth from this city whose people are unjust and oppressive, and bestow on us from thee a guardian (wali), and bestow on us from thee a helper (4:75).

There is no doubt that it is the duty of the Imam, the divinely appointed ‘wali’,
to struggle for justice, and liberate the masses from the yoke of the unjust oppressors. Imam Hussein (a.s.) rose up to sacrifice all he had not just to put an end to injustice, or to overthrow a corrupt ruler and end a degenerate regime, but his supreme aim was primarily to save Islam from destruction.
His objective was to prevent degeneration which sooner or later had destroyed other divinely sent religions.

True Islam teaches us that all human beings are equal. Islam teaches us that in front of the law, the ruler has no preference over the ruled. Islam rejects systems of governments where law is the will of the ruler and the lands ruled by the rulers are their personal property.

Yazeed, (lanat Ullah) the ruler at that time, made a pretence of Islam, and it is characteristic of all despotic regimes that they encourage a brand of religion which does not interfere with their evil mode of governments.

Imam Hussein (a.s.) stood up to challenge what the regime was doing to the God sent religion, the existence of which guaranteed the future welfare of the human race. He declared that the true religion of God is only that which stands adamantly in the way of arbitrary rule of despots, that which upholds the rights of the oppressed, which opposes corruption and perversion in every sphere of human life and which never comes to terms with oppression, cruelty, greed, injustice and exploitation.

Who Is Imam Hussein (a.s.)?

Imam Hussein (a.s.) was born on the 3rd. of shabaan in the fourth hijra. (Hijra is the Islamic year). He is the son of the warrior and vicegerent of of the Holy prophet (s.a.w.) – Imam Ali (a.s.), and his mother is the pure lady Fatima. Fatima is the beloved daughter of the Holy prophet (s.a.w.). Born in the prophets household it was the holy prophet himself who named him Hussein.
He was raised under the care of the holy Prophet (s.a.w.) and drank deeply of Islamic principles of justice and righteousness. He was dearly loved by the holy prophet (s.a.w.).
Indeed it was the holy prophet (s.a.w.) himself who introduced Imam Hussein (a.s.) to the masses and proclaimed the greatness of his beloved grandson – Hussein(a.s.). The holy prophet (s.a.w.) professed his love for Hussein (a.s.) not only in words but by action too.

But it is a great tragedy, that after the holy prophet (s.a.w.), the disobedient, and those lusting for power and aspiring to gain control of the Islamic government, forgot the words of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), and began to oppress all those who opposed them and went forward to commit the greatest crime in human history by brutally killing Imam Hussein (a.s.), his children and his companions on the plains of Karbala , because they were God fearing and good people. The oppressors were so brutal that they did not even spare the innocent 6 month baby of Imam Hussein (a.s.)
Imam Hussein (a.s.) was with his family members and companions in Karbala deprived of water and food for 3 days, and then he along with his children, brother, nephews were slaughtered.

His brother Abbas {a.s} was also brutally killed while trying to bring water from the river Euphrates for the children. After martyring Imam Hussien {a.s}, Hazrat Abbas {a.s} the companions and the children, the cruel army now turned its attention towards plundering the tents and belongings of the Imam and his companions. They looted everything and made the women captive. The only male person taken as captive was Imam Zainul Abedeen {a.s} the son of Imam Hussien {a.s} who was very ill. Lady Zainab {a.s} the sister of Imam Hussien {a.s}, herself a captive now took charge in looking after the women folk. This caravan of captives, along with the severed heads of the martyrs were taken on long journey from Kerbala in Iraq to Damascus in Syria, where the ruler was based.

The holy shrines of Imam Hussein (a.s.) and his brother Hazrat Abbas (a.s..) were erected decades later, and that of the beloved sister of Imam Hussein (a.s.) – Lady Zainab (a.s.) was constructed in Damascus where she was martyred after many years.

All the Prophets (a.s.) and Imams (a.s.) have said :
“The world is a garden, In the garden there is a tree, The tree is the Holy Prophets family. In the garden there is also a rose. The rose is Imam hussein (a.s.)”
In the heavens, Almighty Allah (s.w.t.) asked all the prophets (a.s.) and all the Imams (a.s.) – “Who will sacrifice his family? Who will sacrifice his baby? Who will sacrifice a 4 year old girl? Who will sacrifice all his belongings?” – To all this Imam Hussein (a.s.) stood up and replied that he would sacrifice all of the above. Imam Hussein (a.s.) sacrificed all he had along with his family members and himself to save the most important and precious thing on earth – Gods religion – ISLAM.

And now the Saudi Mufti (religious leaders) have issued a Fatwa (decree) calling for the destruction and demolition of the Holy Shrines of Imam Hussein (a.s.) and that of his brother Hazrat Abbas (a.s.) in Karbala and also the holy shrine of Lady Zainab (a.s.) in Damascus!! We ask – What wrong have the holy shrines committed? Did the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) not explicitly command us to love his family members? Has the holy Quran not ordered us to love the members of the holy prophets household? Why are the Muftis of Saudi Arabia going against the commands of Allah (s.w.t.) and the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)?
The Holy prophet (s.a.w.) has taught us to respect other religions and to respect their shrines be it Muslim, Christian or Hindu! then why are the Saudi Muftis going against the teachings of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)? Please leave these shrines alone.
