Reliance Broadcast plans 50 patented shows over 24 months

Mumbai : Reliance Broadcast Network, a multi-media entity within the Anil Ambani Group, plans to host some 50 patented shows and events across languages over the next year for a big slice in the Rs.1,600 crore ($350 million) market.

Called intellectual property business in industry jargon, these shows and programmes span music awards, talent hunts and realty shows, often televised, that have become a big hit over the past few years in the growing Indian media and entertainment space.

“There is a huge potential in the intellectual property industry and we are optimistic of the returns it can give us using our captive media assets in out-of-home, radio and digital space,” said Arjun Singh Baran, head of this unit with BIG Live.

“This line of our business will also enable us to build brands out of these properties, creating greater value for advertisers, while providing a great entertainment platform for audiences,” Baran said. “These will be developed, created and owned by the company.”

According to industry analysts, the intellectual property business should grow at around 60-80 percent year-on-year in India, with the potential for some shows to garner as much as Rs.4-5 crore (around $1 million) each.

In the next few months, Reliance Broadcast Network will be hosting a series of awards shows called “Television Biggies” in Marathi, Bengali, Telugu and Kannada.

It has also tied up with the Indian Music Academy to host a national music awards show this quarter.

Added to this there are entertainment awards to salute the entire entertainment industry of Gujarat and Orissa — states rich in music heritage but never having received their due.

Also in the pipeline are BIG Music Awards in Tamil and Rajasthani, officials said.

Earlier, in the previous quarter, the company had launched what they call India’s first regional music awards shows executed in Marathi, Telugu, Kannnada, Punjabi and Bengali.

“We are particularly looking at the current festive quarter to not only optimise the returns on our properties but also deliver some great shows,” Baran said, adding the idea was also to leverage its association with music through 92.7 BIG FM.

Company officials said they had also planned to host other television awards shows to celebrate excellence in the regional space. And by the end of this quarter, BIG Live would have executed over 15 shows.
