Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday named Qamaruz Zaman Kaira to head the Information Ministry after accepting the resignation of Sherry Rehman as federal minister for information, reports Daily Times.
“Sherry met the prime minister to formally present her resignation. Gilani tried to convince her to reverse her decision, but she expressed her inability in the given circumstances,” sources said.
Kaira was earlier working as federal minister for Kashmir affairs and northern areas.
“Kaira’s name was recommended by Sherry herself,” the sources told Daily Times.
The former information minister resigned late on Friday after she could not convince the Pakistan People’s Party senior leadership against gags on the media.
A journalist herself, and a staunch supporter of an independent media, Sherry said the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority had not consulted her before it took several private news channels off air on Friday.
The sources claimed that some of her colleagues in the cabinet were already at odds with Sherry for her liberal stance on the media’s independence.
