Prasar Bharti , India’s Public Broadcasting service has dropped five free to air television channels from its Direct to Home service ‘DD Direct Plus . The channels include Aaj Tak, Headlines Today, TV9, Akash Bangla and Star Utsav.
The decision to drop these channels, according to Prasar Bharti, came after these channels failed to pay the carriage fee. Under the DD Direct Plus rules Indian channels are required to pay Rs 25 lac per annum as a carriage fee. Foreign channels are carried after they pay the double amount of fee i.e. Rs 50 lacs.
DD Direct Plus which claims an audience of five million homes in India had fixed August 15 as the deadline for payment . The deadline was also extended several times. But this time DD Direct Plus acted tough and dropped the channels.
