Indian Government to Strengthen Radio-TV Network

Indian government has decided to strengthen government owned Doordarshan and Akashvani network. Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, P. R. Dasmunsi informed Lok on Tuesday.

The Government has proposed to set up 93 AIR transmitters and 41 Doordarshan transmitters in the country during 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. in addition, 100 Low Power Transmitters (LPTs) will also be set up in the North Eastern States.

The total estimated cost in respect of All India Radio is 182 crores. The same in respect of Doordarshan is 198.37 crores.

The criteria followed by the Government for establishment of Radio and TV transmitters include factors such as extent of resultant coverage to urban and rural population; provision of coverage to tribal, hilly, remote and border areas; terrain conditions etc., and it has no linkage to the number of cities.
