Things are changing rapidly in newsrooms around the world. There is clear evidence that this development will continue. Following the successful 6th International Newsroom Summit 2007, Ifra decided to make this an annual conference. Consequently, on 28 and 29 February 2008, chief executives, chief editors and editorial strategists will meet in Madrid to discuss topical issues and innovations in the newsroom .
The conference will focus on the challenges that need to be tackled in 2008: new thinking, new organisation, infrastructure, technologies and skills. More publishers and editors will realise that not to implement substantial change is not an option anymore and that embracing the digital media is a huge opportunity for journalism and their newsrooms.
Representatives from Axel Springer, Germany; Nettby, Norway; Daily Telegraph and Nottingham Evening Post, U.K.; El Tiempo, Columbia, and Grupo Reforma, Mexico, among others, will give practice-based reports on the main conference topics:
– The converging newsroom,
– Understanding the audience,
– Monetising multiple media newsrooms and
– Developing the staff.
Guiding through the two-day conference will be Eva Domínguez, journalist and consultant in new media from Spain, and Mats J. Larsson, editor in chief at AB Dagens Nyheter from Sweden: an ideal line-up, as before going freelance the former held the position of chief editor multilmedia for La Vanguardia Digital, while the latter has the latest insights from the integration process launched at Dagens Nyheter in summer 2007.
In the lead-up to the International Newsroom Summit, Ifra offers two all-day preparatory workshops, both on 27 February 2008, focusing on the following topics:
– Workshop 1: “Reorganising newsrooms for multiple media” (IfraNewsplex).
– Workshop 2: “Creative Remix” (Apple).
