History Announces Nationwide Initiative Honoring Abraham Lincoln

From a humble childhood spent in a log cabin in Kentucky to his eventual rise in the political arena to the office of President of the United States to issuing the Emancipation Proclamation and proclaiming Thanksgiving a national holiday, Abraham Lincoln is one of the most revered and admired American leaders in history. Today, at Lincoln’s birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky, History(TM) announced a year-long initiative by the network and its partners to commemorate the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, with a new campaign, GIVE A INCOLNFOR LINCOLN(TM) at an event honoring Lincoln’s legacy.

At the event, National Park Foundation Honorary Chair Mrs. Laura Bush also celebrated Lincoln’s legacy with 50 junior rangers from Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Hodgenville gathered at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site for a day dedicated to Lincoln’s legacy.

The goal of GIVE A LINCOLNFOR LINCOLN(TM) program is to encourage Americans of all ages to donate Lincoln-head pennies, five dollar bills, or make larger donations online to help preserve six key sites associated with Lincoln’s life and legacy. History(TM) is working with the National Park Foundation (NPF) as a primary partner on the campaign, together with the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP).

All donations collected through this campaign will be distributed to the NPF and the NTHP for the six Lincoln sites– Lincoln’s birthplace in Kentucky, his boyhood home in Indiana, the Lincoln home in Springfield, Illinois, the Lincoln Memorial and Ford’s Theatre, both in Washington, D.C. and Lincoln’s Cottage in Washington, D.C.

History(TM) will be working with schools and communities nationwide on GIVE A LINCOLNFOR LINCOLN(TM), aiming to raise a minimum of $200,000, or $1000 for every year since Lincoln was born, for education and preservation programs at the six historic sites. Contests for teachers and students to create Lincoln-themed lesson plans and coin boxes will be another exciting element of the initiative, which will commence in January, with contests running from February through May.
