New Delhi : Inaugurating a swanky, high-tech media centre for journalists reporting on the Delhi government, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Tuesday said a welfare fund of Rs.5 crore was being planned for scribes.
The renovation and upgradation of the existing press room by the Public Works Department (PWD) has cost the government Rs.50 lakh.
Dikshit said her government was committed to work for the welfare of journalists, adding that the welfare fund will include compensation to journalists’ kin in case of death or injury.
The government plans to pay Rs.5 lakh to the kin of the journalist who dies, Rs.3 lakh for those who die an accidental death and Rs.2 lakh to the ones who get injured.
The chief minister said the issue will soon get the cabinet nod.
The centre has been equipped with basic equipment like five computers with Internet connectivity, printers, faxes, scanners, Xerox machines, plasma and LCD television sets. It will soon be Wi-Fi enabled.
Dikshit said the government has also decided to amend the rules relating to medical facilities for journalists.
