Endemol, a world leader in entertainment programming has announced it has secured more international deals for Jerry Seinfeld’s The Marriage Ref, having launched the show at this week’s Mipcom market in Cannes.
Leading Australian broadcaster Seven Network has commissioned a major prime time run of the show, which will be locally produced by Southern Star Entertainment. Seven has also acquired the NBC version of The Marriage Ref from Endemol Worldwide Distribution.
The deal follows the announcement that Abu Dhabi Media Company has bought both the format and the NBC series.
Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen Rakieten, Co-Creator and Executive Producer of The Marriage Ref, have been in Cannes this week to promote the show.
“We are very excited to be finding out that the humour of Marriage has no boundaries” says Jerry Seinfeld.
“The reception we’ve had from the international community has been overwhelming” adds Ellen Rakieten.
Rory Callaghan Managing Director of Southern Star Entertainment comments: “This is the show that everyone wants and we are extremely proud to be partnering with Seven to bring it to viewers in Australia. It’s very easy to imagine The Marriage Ref becoming a major hit down under – not only has it got brilliant comedy value but people are going to have a lot of fun getting involved and taking sides.”
Tim Worner Director of Programming and Production at Seven Network Australia comments: “Jerry Seinfeld is a legend of comedy and Seinfeld the show is a timeless classic. Frankly he doesn’t exactly need to be doing something like The Marriage Ref but to hear him talk about it is to hear someone who wants to do it all over again.
“With this show he has a vision and he is so enthusiastic and so passionate about every detail of that vision. He describes marriage as a “comedy goldmine” and this show is designed to make the most of it. It’s not nasty, it’s not marriage counseling, it’s making genuine fun out of situations that couples the world over will be able to relate to.
“Seven is really excited to be part of his vision and belief that The Marriage Ref can do for marriage what Seinfeld did for singledom”.
Endemol is the exclusive distributor of The Marriage Ref format across all platforms outside of the USA and will produce local versions of the show around the world. Endemol’s newly launched operation, Endemol Worldwide Distribution, is also globally distributing the NBC series, which is being Executive Produced by Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen Rakieten whose previous credits include twenty-three years with “The Oprah Winfrey Show”.
The Marriage Ref marks Jerry Seinfeld’s first television series since “Seinfeld” ended its record-breaking nine year run in May 1998. Seinfeld will be behind the camera for the show, which has been commissioned for a prime time run of six hour-long episodes on NBC in March 2010.
The Marriage Ref will feature opinionated celebrities, comedians, sports personalities and international A-list stars who will candidly comment, judge and offer different strategies to real-life couples in the midst of a classic marital dispute. The show vows to look at relationships unlike anything you’ve ever seen on TV.
