Disha Stars Community launches website for Diabetics

New Delhi: Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus has emerged as a serious medical and social concern in the country today. To address the needs of patients suffering from this disease Disha Stars Community – support group for-by-of children, youth and families with Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus and their families – in association with Medtronic Foundation, an organization passionate about improving the health of people and communities throughout the world, today launched website.

The launch of this one-of-its-kind portal for Diabetic patients was launched at the Press Club of Bangalore, Cubbon Park, in the presence of many eminent personalities who have dedicated their careers and lives for the better understanding and management of Type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus or IDMM.

Present on the occasion were Prof HN Mahabala (Father of Computer Science & Information Technology in India and Former Director, IIT Madras), Ms Usha Dhiman (India’s first recipient of Victory Gold Medal Of Honor For Conquest Of Type 1 Diabetes For Greater Than 50 Years and Dr SS Srikanta (Medical Director, Senior Endocrinologist Diabetologist, Samatvam Jnana Sanjeevini, Bangalore). Ms Usha, who has successfully braved childhood diabetes for more than 50 years and the longest survivor of this disease in India, also shared her experiences with the audience. is a web portal for diabetic patients and especially for all type 1 diabetic patients. The mission of Disha Stars Community through this unique portal is to inspire, motivate and help children and youth with IDDM (also known as Type I or Juvenile Diabetes) and their families in India so that they can achieve and maintain highest health, happiness, well being, productivity and prosperity.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. S S Srikanta, Medical Director, Senior Endocrinologist Diabetologist, Samatvam Jnana Sanjeevini, Bangalore, said, “Disha Stars takes pride in launching this comprehensive website for people suffering with Type1 Diabetes. Through this website we have tried to reach out to these patients and provide them all the necessary support 24*7 by addressing their needs related to their condition, possible treatment and other concerns. Free consultation from our panel of experienced doctors will also be given through this website. People can register on this website and share their views and experience with other people and spread more and more awareness by being part of online discussions and forums on IDMM.”

S.S Srikantha and efforts of his team of about 12 doctors are behind this project. Patients can register themselves on this website by user ID and password. They can ask questions to the doctors and find information about diabetes and how to control it. The web portal will provide tele-counseling and tele-consultation for individual health and psychosocial problems, with diabetes educators, dialectologists and other medical specialists.
