The districts most influential Latina reporter Celinda “Cindy” Pena has joined MAYA as Director of Public Relations. Pena’s responsibilities include managing public relations and media relations for MAYA and MAYA clients including The Department of Homeland Security, The Navy, The Office of Minority Heath, Geico and Pepco.
“I am looking forward to bringing what I’ve learned in journalism to the world of public relations and marketing, especially in marketing to the Hispanic community,” she said.
Pena came from WUSA 9 as a general assignment reporter, bringing a wealth of experience in covering local, national and international news. The two-time Emmy nominated reporter has covered catastrophic events including 9/11 and the D.C. Sniper attacks. Pena also covered the heated debate of immigration from Capitol Hill to county council in Northern Virginia.
Pena is a Washington D.C. area native. She graduated from the University of Maryland. After college, she started her career in journalism in Laredo, Texas as the main weathercaster at the ABC affiliate, KLDO-TV. In its first year, the station was number one in the market. Cindy was a member of the top ranked anchor team in the city, which won the Texas Associated Press award for the best newscast.
Pena later moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a reporter for Worldnet TV, an affiliate of the United States Information Agency. There she covered international events, including the summits between President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
Along with her impressive work history, Pena is an Honorary Board member for the Montgomery County Mental Health Association and a frequent keynote speaker and lecturer on Hispanic issues, education and cancer awareness.
Pena is a cancer survivor and speaks to groups about her successful battle against the disease. Pena is a strong supporter of the area’s Hispanic population. She has been honored by the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Prince George’s County Government for her service to the community. She often volunteers at her children’s elementary school, where she also served as PTA treasurer.
