In line with the year 2008’s theme for World AIDS Day (Take the Lead, Stop AIDS. Keep The Promise), BIG 92.7 FM – Hyderabad’s no. 1 FM station and APSACS (Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society) pledged to keep the promise of leading the efforts of Hyderabadi’s in fighting AIDS by launching ‘Take the lead’ campaign in colleges. The announcement was made on the eve of the World AIDS Day by RV Chandravadan, IAS, Project Director- APSACS. Also present on the occasion were renowned music director Chakri and film actor Nikhil (Happy Days and Yuvatha). Music Director Chakri took the first lead to instill enthusiasm in college students by composing one line for the campaign.
Starting first week of December, ‘Take the lead’ college campaign will spread across various colleges in the city with BIG FM RJ’s going to colleges and creating awareness about APSACS initiative. There will be debates, discussions, drama and many other activities to activate college students to take the lead and be the evangelists in stopping this deadly virus to spread in the society.
The day also saw first-of-its-kind debate on AIDS held on Radio, students from SP College debated on topics like ‘Safe Sex, Sex with one partner, being preventive is uncool etc. The debate was moderated by BIG FM’s Swapna and actor Nikhil. The debate was organized to appeal youth to come forward with their views and contribute actively for a better health oriented society.
Commenting on BIG FM’s role on the issue, Swapna Sundari, Regional Programming Head (South) – BIG 92.7 FM said “As a responsible medium, it is our duty to take up the challenge of educating the city about the deadly virus. People contract the virus due to ignorance, due to lack of knowledge about the basics. This is where we see ourselves playing an important role. We are grateful to APSACS for considering us as partners in championing this ‘take the lead’ campaign.
