BBC Blast to showcase next generation of designers

On Saturday 26 January five lucky finalists will see their work being shown as part of Matthew Williamson’s, 10 Years In Fashion exhibition, at the Design Museum.

The Mexican-inspired dress designs will be on display in the Riverside Space. The day will also reveal the overall winner, who will get the fantastic opportunity of spending a day with Matthew Williamson.

This event is the culmination of a collaboration between BBC Blast, Matthew Williamson and the Design Museum in a bid to unearth the UK’s most promising young fashion talent. This exciting opportunity included top tips from Matthew Williamson on how to get the designs started.

Each candidate was judged by representatives from all the partners on finished design, evidence of research around the theme “Mexico”, awareness of Matthew’s style, current fashion trends along with creativity and originality. Entrants were also offered the opportunity to design one or two accessories to accompany their designs.

Matthew Williamson says: “I am thrilled to be involved with BBC Blast for the Matthew Williamson competition and hope that it may help many young people discover their talents for design. I have a huge amount of respect for BBC Blast and how it provides design opportunities and builds creative communities.”

Jane Quinn, BBC Learning Executive, adds: “We have been overwhelmed by the number of entries and the enthusiasm of the young people who have submitted their designs for this competition – with entries coming from individuals, schools and colleges.

“This partnership has highlighted that there is a high number of talented youngsters out there. As result we will be launching The Blast Fashion Label in April of this year, to provide inspiring designers with more support and opportunities.”

Jane McCarthy, Head of Education, Design Museum, says: “We have been amazed by the response to our new partnership with BBC Blast. Hundreds of young people have seized the opportunity to show off their imagination and design skills. The results are fantastic.

“This partnership has engaged a new audience for our exhibition Matthew Williamson – 10 Years In Fashion and we look forward to inspiring more design stars of future with equally stimulating and interactive resources.”

BBC Blast is a unique creativity venture offering young people the opportunity to discover and gain experience in the arts, film, design, music, writing. It provides the chance for young people to get expert advice from industry professionals and showcase their creative work.
