After 22 years at Draftfcb Ulka and its predecessor agencies, during which he oversaw its growth into one of India’s Top 5 agencies, Anil Kapoor has decided to assume the title of chairman emeritus of Draftfcb Ulka, giving him both the time and opportunity to pursue outside activities like teaching, writing and board memberships. Going forward, he will continue to act as a resource for the agency in an advisory capacity.
Kapoor was most recently a member of Draftfcb’s Global Operating Council and the regional president of Draftfcb Asia Pacific Africa, a position he assumed following the 2006 merger that created Draftfcb. Up until that time, he served as managing director and CEO of Draftfcb Ulka, which has six offices in India including its headquarters in Mumbai, as well as New Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, and Cochin.
“Over the past 22 years, Anil has set the standard for strong business and managerial skills, always leading by example” said Laurence Boschetto, global CEO and president of Draftfcb. “While a great strategist, Anil firmly understands the importance and difficulty of executing against that strategy, and he has always delivered. The strong, unified management team he has built is perhaps his greatest legacy.”
Kapoor’s core management team over the past two decades has included Nagesh Alai, CFO; Niteen Bhagwat, CEO Interface Communications; M.G. (Ambi) Parameswaran, CEO Draftfcb Ulka in Mumbai; Shashi Sinha, CEO of Lodestar UM Media; and Arvind Wable, CEO Draftfcb Ulka in Delhi. K.S. (Chax) Chakravarthy rounded out the team when he joined Draftfcb-Ulka two years ago as National Creative Director.
“Anil’s core leadership team has long believed in the vital importance of teamwork, and they will continue leading our Indian offices in their respective roles,” said Boschetto. “Together, they have built a learning organization that continues to put our clients and our people first. As Anil transitions out of active day-to-day management of the agency, our operations in India remain in very strong hands.”
Stated Kapoor: “This decision represents a natural progression for me. I have enjoyed every day of my career, and look forward to continuing my long relationship with Draftfcb Ulka, albeit in a different capacity. I am a firm believer that our fully integrated agency model is right for these times, and we are well-positioned for future growth. It is the right time for me to take on this new role.”
Over the last two decades Ulka has transformed itself into a complete marketing communication solutions provider with a Top 5 mainline agency Draftfcb Ulka Advertising, a second agency Interface Communications [ranked in the Top 20], Lodestar UM Media [a top 3 media house], Draftfcb Ulka Interactive [Direct and Digital], Draftfcb Ulka Healthcare, Interface Interactive, Nebula Films, Procyon Graphics and Cogito Consulting.
Through these units, Draftfcb’s Indian operations serve well over 100 clients managing over 250 brands in diverse sectors such as automotive, consumer goods, consumer durables, media, technology, retail, and healthcare.
“I am proud of seeing a country with a developing economy like India assume greater stature in our global organization, which led to my being given additional responsibilities across Asia Pacific and Africa,” added Kapoor. “I am even prouder of the unified leadership team I assembled in India, most of whom have been with the agency for more than 20 years. It’s most satisfying knowing that the agency will remain under their experienced and watchful eyes, guaranteeing an extremely smooth transition.”
Kapoor’s successor as regional president of Asia Pacific will be announced shortly.
