Airing Tehelka expose footage has resulted in a blackout of three national news channels in Ahmedabad (Gujrat, India). The news channels banned by the Ahmedabad collector Dhananjay Trivedi are NDTV, Aaj Tak and CNN- IBN.
These news channels have been banned for an indefinite period as a ‘precautionary measure’ by the district election officer who reportedly feared the telecast can incite violence in the communally sensitive district.
The Ahmedabad District Collector had also banned a local Gujarati news channel for 15 days on Monday in violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
“The channel had aired a political programme without the prior approval of the committee formed by the Election Commission,” collector Dhananjay Dwivedi, who is also the District Election Officer said.
This is not the first time when the news channels have been banned in India. Star News also faced a partial black out in Dharamshala area of Himachal Pradesh on July 27 ,2007 when the channel had exposed a Minister.
